Happy Tuesday, Friends.
I’ll briefly give you an
overview of our personal situation regarding Hurricane Helene and the impact on
our community.
Western North Carolina
experienced much more than was expected from the most recent hurricane. What
you see on the national news is not an exaggeration. The devastation we see and
hear about is unbelievable.
People from many other states have found their way to this area with donations of badly needed items.
My husband and I feel very fortunate that our only inconveniences were that we lost cable/internet, cell service and needed to reschedule our cruise to next year.
We have AT&T cell service,
and they installed a temporary cell tower in our town. Then our internet was
restored after 5 days. I’M NOT COMPLAINING!
We took the opportunity to join the efforts of a local church in accepting donations and distributing supplies to those who need them. I’ll spare you the many stories we’ve heard. Just know that our hearts are broken, but our faith in humanity is restored after this experience.
Since we have internet, I am
back to work but my husband continues to help at the church. These small
communities in western North Carolina are helping each other and will be just
fine. It won’t be today, but it will happen.
This week we are focused on Hurricane Milton. Our son is in Palm Harbor, FL and our daughter is in Orlando.
Praying for everyone in the path of this storm.
To keep busy, I decided to
go through Halloween cross stitched pieces that needed to be fully finished.
I began with Halloween
Alphabet. This was the piece I started at the retreat in Montgomery.
The chart is by Primrose Cottage. Stitched on 32 count vintage country mocha, using the called-for DMC floss. I found the frame at Michael's.
The following pieces were
stitched in 2021 and placed in the proverbially “under-the-bed-box.” The fabric
on all of them is 14-count black aida and I used the called-for over-dyed
floss.
Catoween Cal
Catoween Wanda
Pumpkin Pile
Give Thanks by The Proper
Stitcher
I’m stitching this on 40-count linen, Chocolate Milk by Fabrics by Stephanie.
Lastly, my husband continues
to tag me in Facebook posts about banana cake. He literally begged for it over
the weekend. So, I gave in and made one for the first time on Sunday.
It’s a moist cake topped with
whipped cream cheese frosting. I couldn’t imagine it…bananas and cream cheese?
But, oh my, it is so good.
You can find the recipe here
if you are interested.
Today is food shopping
day. We do not meal plan as usual because we will work with whatever is
available in the grocery store. Still…I’M NOT COMPLAINING!
I hope things are well
with you and I’ll be back soon to share some sewing progress.
Praying for mercy on
Florida!

I am glad to hear that you are okay. The devastation was off the charts for an inland hurricane.
I was so relieved to hear that you were home before the hurricane, and I'm so very sad about the situation in western NC. I cry every time I see a video, it is just mind numbingly awful, I can't bear to think about those who lost their lives, plus the wildlife that suffered. :( Yes it is a shame that the government is doing so little while protesting that they are doing so much. Grrrr.
I'll definitely pray for your son and daughter - hope your son is evacuating! My SIL has lived a little north of Tampa 25 years and never evacuated. She says they are "used to it."
This reminds me of Aug-Sep 2005 when we had Katrina then Rita a month apart in the Gulf. But Helene's destruction inland has set a record.
I'm surprised you've not had banana cake before. That looks like a great recipe!
Love your gorgeous cross stitch finishes. Hugs to you and your family and hope they are able to get out of the path of Milton. So wonderful to hear your community coming together to help each other. Are food supply trucks able to get in to the stores there?
So glad to hear you're doing okay and there are so many wonderful helpers, too. You deserve a new start, and looks like you've picked a very appropriate one! Yum on the banana cake! I will be sending prayers up for your son and daughter.
Thankful you are well in your area & are able to help the others. Prayers for the safety & protection from those affected by the next one. Banana cake? going to try it.
I'm so glad you're doing well after that horrible hurricane. It doesn't look like Milton will reach you. I hope your kids are okay. My brother lives in Tennessee and just experienced flooded roads. Not too bad when seeing all that devastation out there. Banana cake sounds so good! I love your kitty Halloween cross stitch pieces! SO cute!!
Awful to read about so much devastation and especially lives lost. So glad that you are OK. Amazing how people will pull together. We found that in France when we had an horrendous storm pass through. Nice finishes and perfect frame for Halloween Alphabet. Cake looks delicious! xx
The media coverage that we get here shows how devastating the situation is and sadly Milton is likely to make it worse. Its always good to see how communities pull together after such an event.
Stay safe & all the best for your family members.
The stitching & finishes are lovely...happy banana cake making and eating
Thank you so much, Faith. My kids in Florida are safe and well. Enjoy the cake.
The hurricanes were so devastating and it was surprising how badly western NC was hit. I am so glad that you and your family are safe and sound. It is a blessing that communities pull together in times of need. I love your finishes- such adorable finishing fabrics too and oh my , that cake. I am adding that to my baking list. Warm hugs and blessings.
