What's In A Name?

First, let me welcome and introduce you to my first blog, Slammin’ the Screen Door.  I have been a reader and follower of some pretty awesome blogs over the years and will now attempt to come off the sidelines and join the virtual world of sharing.

Now for the name… I grew up in south Alabama and my grandparent’s home had a wooden screen door on the back porch. As children - always in a hurry- we ran in and out of that door and never took the time to keep it from slamming.  Oddly, my grandmother never corrected us.

Over the years, my imaginary screen door has not stopped slamming and this is not a complaint.  It is an indicator of how busy life has been (with all good things).  As a teenager, I was involved in many school functions and after school activities.  As an adult, I have been blessed with a full time job, lots of hobbies and most importantly, I became a wife and mom.

My husband and I have two fantastic kids… just ask us J  Our son (21) is in the Navy and our daughter (18) just graduated high school in May.  This is our first summer without scouts or some sort of travel sport schedule to follow and we will no longer have the many school activities to attend.

To keep my screen door slamming, I plan to take this new found freedom and get back to the many hobbies I’ve dabbled in over the years.  This includes scrapbooking and reading but mostly I enjoy activities that involve a stitch of some sort like quilting, embroidery, knitting and crocheting.

Slamming the Screen Door will be my place to reveal the long list of UFOs in my ‘craft room’ (which is more like an oversized closet!) and hope that you will help keep me accountable J

How do you tackle UFOs?  Do you work on only one until it is done or do you keep a few going at a time?

Before signing off, many bloggers have inspired me over the years (see my Favorite Reads?) and there are a few people that I need to thank…

For her encouragement, quilty inspiration, sharing her beautiful garden and travel posts…Candace @ Squash House Quilts

For her encouragement, Blog Buddy posts and many wonderful ideas…Karen @ Sew Many Ways

For her incredible talents as a blog designer and patience with the newbies…Karen @ KarenValentineDesign.  You can also find her here.

I promise pictures on the next post and it will be a "quilty" one.

Thank you so much for visiting!

May your screen door keep slammin’ too J

Welcome, Jeanna! It's so nice to finally see you in blogland - I know you're going to have lots of fun! Karen did a wonderful job on your layout and I love the story of the Screen Door! I look forward to seeing all the wonderful projects to come! I hate to admit it, but I mostly only work on one project at a time and take it to completion, with the exception of some stitchery projects which I don't consider UFO's, just WIP's (works in progress - which was coined by my friend Stephanie!)
Cheers!

Hi Jeanna, I'm Jeanna too! I try to stay on projects until I am finished, but somehow it doesn't always work - I need to make baby quilts or whatever. Sometimes I see something that I just have to make and I drop everything to make it. I do try to get back to things, and I keep my UFOs on a shelf where they constantly remind me that they are still waiting!

Welcome to blogging! What a beautiful site you've created.

I'm a multi-tasking crafter. I have numerous projects on the go all the time. I've taken to choosing focus projects for the year, giving them deadlines, so that I can enjoy the feeling of the finish! (It's sort of working)

Hi Jeanna! I just saw on Karen's blog that you'd begun your new blog and hopped over for a peek and to welcome you. I started mine just over three years ago, though I'm not as faithful about updating it as many. ;)

As for UFOs, I don't have any — that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. LOL! I call them WIPs to make them sound a bit less "abandoned", and I try to have as few going at once as possible. Right now I'm working on a quilt and a knitted cardigan, but I have a "line" of projects awaiting their turn.

Hello! I also love things with "stitches" and have many memories of being told to NOT slam the screen door! LOL!

I have two kiddos, both in high school, the eldest just got his first job as a Subway sandwich maker. Seems like I'm forever driving kids somewhere - school, work, friends. I'll miss them when they leave the house someday, but admit that a summer of just relaxing sounds nice...

I don't have a blog, but look forward to reading yours.

Awesome first post, Jeanna! I found you through Karen's Sew Many Ways blog.

Well so far your blog looks beautiful. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you blog about.

You already have more followers than I had when I started out. After 4 1/2 years of blogging I had a total of 13 followers. Then Karen of Sew Many Ways wrote about what makes a good blog and I made a comment and then she featured me (she's a sweetheart) and before the week was up I had 200 followers. No one knew about me, yet I had been blogging for years. It's amazing what one kind word can do. I now have been blogging for over 5 years.

I wish you luck and hope you come visit my blog too sometime.

Hey so glad ya'll came to visit us in this big ole blog land. I have book marked your blog, not only for my own fun but to keep you accountable for your UFO's. Now now don't go asking to see mine there's not a big enough screen in the world to show you that. LOL I was born and raised in Miami, we lived about a mile from Coral Gables. We vacationed in GA in the summer to families that we didn't get to see except in the summer. I love to quilt, embroidery, scrap, EPP, can you see why I have so many UFO's. I'm relatively new to blogging as well - I'm trying to focus on how crafts can improve our lives and characters. I posted a topic on crafty organization last week that you might find interesting - especially the stashbusting "craft bags" idea... http://ancoracrafts.com/acrafty-goodness-003/

Welcome to the world of blogging! Stopping by from Sew Many Ways! I too started blogging, almost two years ago, when my youngest son graduated high school. My husband and I made a big move from MI to TN while our kids started adventures of their own, college, jobs, engagements etc. Talk about empty nest syndrome! Anyway, blogging was and is a way to keep in touch with those I don't get to see that often any more. It has also opened up an entire new world for me and my creative/sewing/painting hobbies and business! Good luck to you and am looking forward to reading more!

Congrats! I love your writing style and look forward to reading more! I'm a quilter-wannabe...I have two UFO quilts from YEARS ago! I thought when we finally became empty nesters two years ago that I would finally get some projects done, even with my full time job, but then my oldest had a baby that we get to love on three or more times a week at night, so I still don't get to do my projects! But I do have a pretty cute grandson :-)

Hi! I too came over from Sew Many Ways. Where in South Alabama did you grow up? I grew up in Mobile, and after 27 years married to a Navy ofifcer we got to settle in Pensacola. It'so good to spend time inthe south again, wecame here after doing twelve years in Maine. I quilt a lot and mainly use my UFO's as a source of constant guilt and frustration. I have just redone my quilting studio, and I can't believe that I dont spend all my spare time in there, but I soend too much time on Pinterest trying to organize it, even though it would probably help if I used it more so that I would know what would work better...it's a vicious cycle. I've added you to my Rss. Look forward to reading your blog!
